Looking for immersive travel experiences. What should I add to my list?
Hello all,
I have been trying to travel more, but I realized I struggle to pick destinations unless there is a specific experience I want to travel for.
I tend to enjoy immersive and outdoor experiences much more than traditional sightseeing or museums. I also enjoy discovering unusual or rare local foods, including things that might be hard to find or even illegal in the US.
Some examples of trips I really enjoyed:
Paris
• Went straight to the Catacombs instead of the main attractions
• Walked through different neighborhoods to see the architecture
• Explored La Grande Epicerie and tried a bunch of local foods back at the hotel
• Tried several soft raw milk cheeses (difficult/impossible to find in the US)
Playa del Carmen / Yucatan
• Skipped the beaches and clubs
• Did a biodiversity tour through an underground river
• Went on a whale shark expedition
• Did a tequila tasting and found tequilas we actually liked despite not being big drinkers
• Loved seeing the wildlife and nature around the temples and cliffs
Galapagos Islands
• Seeing the wildlife and plant life up close
• Walking through the island towns and seeing how residents live
• Visiting small local businesses and stores with locally made goods
• Tried guinea pig while in Ecuador
Washington DC
• Biking through the streets and through Georgetown
• Browsing bookstores and exploring neighborhoods
• Museums did not really hold my attention unless they were interactive
This seems to be a pattern for me. Museums usually do not hold my attention unless they are part of a tour or something interactive.
I would much rather do things like
• Outdoor walking tours
• Wildlife encounters
• Caves or underground environments
• Exploring neighborhoods and local markets
• Trying unusual local foods
What are some incredible immersive travel experiences you recommend anywhere in the world?
I would love to hear both the experience and where it can be found.
