Visa not approved yet — should I sign a lease or wait?
Hi everyone,
I’m an incoming international student for Fall 2026 at Purdue, and I could really use some advice from those who have experience with housing here.
I’m currently considering signing a lease at Fairway Apartments, but I haven’t received my visa yet. The lease is a full 12-month commitment with no early termination clause, which makes me a bit nervous about potential risks.
I understand that reletting (subleasing) is an option, but I’m wondering how realistic that actually is in practice.
If anyone has gone through a similar situation, I’d really appreciate your insights:
- Have you (or someone you know) successfully relet your lease at Purdue?
- How easy or difficult was it to find someone to take over?
- Around what time of year is it easier/harder to relet?
- Would you recommend signing early in my situation, or waiting until the visa is secured?
I really like the apartment and would love to live there, but I also want to make a responsible decision given the uncertainty.
Thank you so much in advance — I truly appreciate any advice or experiences you’re willing to share!
