This show ought to correct a glaring problem, or it will just be straight up bad
Lots to enjoy about Paradise. Actors are doing quality work, set and sound design are well done. Even most of the dialogue is poignant and works for the narrative.
The issue? (Spoilers Below)
Jane Driscoll. The character is just...deus ex machina in a pretty, skinny, white lady. She can do anything, be anywhere, and apparently kill anyone, because crocodile tears and obvious indulgent flattery. It's not about not liking the actor or character, but the character is ruining the show.
Xavier should have known immediately several times that she wasn't right. In season 1, her reaction to seeing Billy dead was watching for Xavier to react, which Mr. Observant glimpsed. She shoots the big bad in the throat on sight when Sinatra's already been subdued. She "just knew" from "chatter" to go check on Xavier's daughter? Vague, weak explanations shouldn't work so well on seasoned Special Service agents.
The link between the big bad and this agent should have been deeply suspected and shared. The dialogue attempts to justify this as simply underestimating/undervaluing her. "She's just Holly Hobby with a gun"....except they don't have guns when that comment gets made.
It's great that Xavier is incredibly good at spotting threats, except when they're super obvious, apparently. That's not on the actors though, that's on the writing.
Then in Season 2, Episode 4, we are expected to believe another murder is commit....under the full glow of a street lamp in the middle of the street, where presumably every single house is occupied. Oh yeah, and that's after the president was killed in season 1, so the next guy made a visible show of upgrading security, including installing new/more cameras.
Are we the viewer expected to believe they don't have vitals tracking technology in their smart watches? These people are billionaires. The likelihood that the new leader could be killed, and that murder framed on someone else when cameras, biometric data, and actual eye witnesses would clearly and definitively paint a different picture.
"Oh nooooo, the tv-President is flatlining. Who is on his detail?"
"It's Agent Driscoll. Weird. Her vitals are stable."
"Are they being attacked by someone that cut their wristband? Give me eyes on that street."
"It's the only street in the entire complex with no cameras! Shit! Guess we'll just have to "
Good luck writers, sincerely!
PS Sorry for calling out the writers specifically, the writing on the whole is pretty compelling. I know very little of how the TV industry actually works, and I'm sure there's a lot of moving parts. Directors, producers, and more all chiming in to create the final product. But yeah, this storyline sucked and the blowback needs to happen for that character soon to remain remotely believable.
