My (19F) dad (55M) won’t let me clear his old computer
I’m not sure if this is the right subreddit to post this, so let me know if I should move it.
In August, I asked my dad for a computer because I was starting university and otherwise would’ve been going in with just a notebook, my phone, and some very old laptops whose batteries barely work. I was totally fine with getting something cheap off Facebook Marketplace, but instead he decided to buy himself a new laptop and give me his old one. He did this the week before classes started.
Because he had to transfer everything over, I had to wait for the old laptop. He didn’t actually start doing that until four days before the semester, then dragged it out over those four days. Any time I asked if it was done, he’d threaten to keep the laptop and say I’d get nothing. I know I’m anxious and I tend to ask repeatedly when I’m stressed, but this put me on edge right before school started.
This isn’t the first time he’s done something like this. He did the same thing with my current phone: I had to wait months because he was waiting for a phone case to arrive, and then he still took a while to switch everything over. I get that I might sound spoiled for being upset I didn’t get the devices right away. What bothers me is how long he drags things out and how he uses the threat of taking them away.
On the laptop he gave me, he kept all his apps and his account “just in case” they didn’t work on the new laptop and he needed to use the old one again. That doesn’t mean I’d get to use the new one if that happened; it just means he’d take mine back if he needed it. It’s been about five months and he hasn’t needed my laptop once.
Recently I asked if I could clear his stuff off because his apps keep running in the background and draining the battery faster, even on sleep. He said no, because what if something happens to his laptop and he needs mine, and then added that his students (he’s a university professor) would have been grateful for the computer, but my brother and I are “spoiled” and only want new things.
I dropped it, but over the weekend one of his apps that I’d disabled turned itself back on and drained the battery while the laptop was in my bag. When I opened it on Sunday at around noon it was at 8%, last charged Thursday night. I mentioned this to him and he got mad, saying he’d used that laptop for years with no problems and the second I get it there are “so many issues.” He told me that if I have so many problems I should just buy my own laptop and he’ll take this one back.
My mom chimed in once to say I should buy an iPad instead. I’ve actually been considering that, because I’d like to be able to write directly on lecture slides without scrambling to copy everything down, and it would also mean he couldn’t control the device.
In the car on the way to school/work (we share one vehicle), he brought it up again and said the battery isn’t supposed to stay charged all day, that it will die on sleep mode, and that I should just be charging it more. I tried to explain that my university doesn’t have many accessible outlets, so sometimes I literally can’t charge it between classes, but he didn’t care and kept focusing on me being the problem rather than his apps running in the background.
I also had to repeatedly ask for the admin username and password just to delete things I downloaded and turn on low power mode. He didn’t remember it; I ended up figuring it out myself.
So my question is: What would you do in my place: keep using this laptop as-is and hope he never needs it, or start saving for my own device (like an iPad or my own laptop) so he can’t control it?
