How are some people so bad with money?

I am a manager at a store and I go above and beyond to give my team as many shifts as possible so they get good money coming in.

Yet they still constantly complain about being broke whilst simultaneously spending heaps on break food, bottles of water, clothing (we work in a mall so they shop on break), alcohol, random items from Target, Uber to and from work instead of bus… the list goes on. Plus they use Afterpay all the time.

Then they come to me and say they are too broke to buy a car, have any savings or travel. When I see them recklessly spending every day with my own eyes lol.

Do they not know what a savings account is??
