What words are and aren't allowed.
I think it's a good thing racial and homophobic slurs are social taboos for the most part in this day. However, words like loser, ugly, lazy, useless all seem to be words that provoke no outrage and are extremely common for people to say while feeling zero remorse. Plenty of people I've seen who preach about having empathy do this exact thing. Words like these serve no other function than pushing a person to the bottom of a social barrel and to make others cast them out. Which in turn convinces that person either to resent the world around them or to turn inward and resent themselves, convincing themselves they are unworthy of love. These people will never say out loud that they believe their life is more intrinsically valuable than a janitor or a cab drivers, but they absolutely believe it on some level. Status hierarchies are usually the greatest factor in external forces that effect the outcome of someone's life other than environment, health, and access to resources. So basically, my point is is that if you engage in this sort of low level yet constant cruelty (A LOT of people do) then you have absolutely no right to call yourself a kind and empathetic person. Realistically, no person should ever say out loud that they are empathetic. You reveal those things about yourself with tangible results from your actions. The minute you declare that about yourself, you stagnate in the development of your moral character. So yeah, rule of thumb: never call yourself a good person to others. Earlier today I had a thought. You can screw a person over so hard in the most morally reprehensible way imaginable that you are entirely within your rights to do so and no one will stop you.
