Yes, I'm familiar with that — you're most likely referring to the **Nyayo Pioneer** (also called the Nyayo Car), Kenya's ambitious attempt at a locally made vehicle.

In the late 1980s, during Daniel arap Moi's presidency, he initiated a project to develop and produce a Kenyan-manufactured car.

It began in 1986 when President Moi challenged engineers and students at the University of Nairobi to create an affordable, homegrown vehicle — inspired partly by Singapore's Proton Saga success around that time. "Nyayo" (meaning "footsteps" in Swahili) was also Moi's famous motto/nickname, so the car carried symbolic weight.

- Five prototypes were built, known as the **Nyayo Pioneer** (or Pioneer Nyayo Cars).

- They included saloon versions and at least one pickup variant.

- The cars reportedly reached a top speed of about 120 km/h and were powered by modest engines (around 1,300–1,500 cc).

- A high-profile event took place on February 27, 1990, at the Kasarani International Sports Centre in Nairobi, where President Moi personally entered one of the prototypes and took it for a test drive — essentially "launching" it publicly with great fanfare.

The government even set up the Nyayo Motor Corporation to handle mass production, with plans for local sourcing of parts to boost industry and self-reliance.

Unfortunately, the project never moved beyond the prototype stage due to challenges like lack of funding, technical issues, alleged interference/sabotage (including claims of foreign/imported car interests), and other complications.

It remains a notable "what if" in Kenyan history — a symbol of ambition for local manufacturing that didn't fully take off.

There are photos and videos still circulating online (especially on social media and YouTube) showing Moi with the car at Kasarani, often shared as a piece of retro Kenyan innovation pride.
