Why I Started Treating My AI Coding Assistant Like a Static Analysis Tool

⚙️ Use Case

Recently I experimented with using Blackbox AI in a way that’s slightly different from the usual “generate this function” workflow.

Instead of asking it to write code, I fed it an existing backend module and asked it to critique it as if it were performing a static analysis review. The goal wasn’t refactoring for style. It was to surface structural risks I might overlook during normal development.

The module handled request validation, transformation, and persistence in a single flow. It worked fine, tests were passing, but something about it felt fragile.

When I prompted Blackbox AI to identify potential maintainability and scaling concerns, it highlighted three interesting patterns:

First, it pointed out implicit coupling between validation logic and database schema assumptions. The validation layer was effectively encoding persistence rules, which means a schema change would silently break assumptions upstream.

Second, it flagged that error handling was inconsistent. Some branches threw exceptions, others returned structured error objects. That inconsistency increases cognitive load and makes global error handling harder later.

Third, it noted that the function boundaries didn’t clearly separate pure logic from side effects. Testing was possible, but not as clean as it could be.

None of this was groundbreaking. But having the AI articulate it in a structured way made it easier to justify a refactor.

I ended up extracting pure transformation logic into isolated functions, standardizing error handling to one pattern, and moving schema-dependent checks closer to the persistence layer. The behavior didn’t change. The clarity did.

What stood out to me is that AI tools are becoming less about code generation and more about architectural perspective. When used deliberately, they can act as a second reviewer that doesn’t get tired and doesn’t skim.

The biggest gain wasn’t speed. It was confidence in the structure.

Curious how others are using AI tools beyond just autocomplete.
