Constantly stereotyped by my flatmates for being an international student and it’s a bit much

I’m an international student from Asia. I’m white but I come from a privileged background. I never go around telling or casually mentioning to people that my parents pay for everything, I do not like to talk about finances with others unless they ask nicely about it and I’m comfortable talking with them.

I live in campus accommodation. Everyone else in my flat is fine except for 3 flatmates that constantly try to pry into my finances which eventually forced me in an uncomfortable situation to admit that my parents pay for everything.

I usually wouldn’t have an issue admitting it, but whenever I try to joke about the culture shocks I’ve had here, or tell them about the norms in my home country in relevant conversations, such as reflecting on my time here, they immediately say that I’m a spoiled brat stuck in my own bubble. I try to educate them and tell them that actually, it’s normal for everyone where I’m from and that I understand that it may be considered a luxury in the UK, but it is a social norm where I’m from because our societies are different. Our cultures are different. An example of this would be that I asked them for advice for how to take the trains here because where I’m from, we don’t have that. Or the fact that where I’m from owning a car is a luxury, compared to the UK and they’ll shut me off. But they will shout and raise their voices to kind of silence me. Calling me a spoiled brat for talking about a bad experience I had on a long haul flight (I was sick on the plane), being laughed at for being positive about the nearly 20 hour journey I have to make to get here, as I said that I’m getting used to it and building a routine. Asking me how much money I get from my parents, not in a nice way but a condescending way, the price of my rent back home, saying I got into uni solely because of money. Even questioning the traditional food I make and how much my things are and what class my flights are in…which are all economy lmao..

They think that I’m stuck in my own bubble. That my dad just hands me his credit card and that I can just go and buy a designer bag right now if i wanted to. When in reality my parents just wanted to give me the education they never had, especially my dad as he dropped out of school at 14, and doesn’t want me to face the burden of student loan debt. Whenever I try to have conversation with them as a flat it always trails back to money which is getting to the point where it’s just irritating. I’m excited to move out at the end of the academic year because it’s just so uncomfortable. they don’t view me as a person or try to listen to what I have to say. The rest of my flatmates wonder why I don’t come out of my room or talk to anyone. It’s because I feel like these 3 flatmates think they have a sense of superiority over me for being more..aware on things. Being on the right side of things. I always overthink what I say and feel worried that people have misinterpreted what I say here and on top of that, im the only international student in my flat.

My father thinks it’s because of the homogeneous society they’ve grown up in. My mom says that I shouldn’t get bothered by this as they’re not open minded and to keep educating them.
