Chapter 1 https://inkster.pkjob.pk/he-chose-me-by-mark-twain-1/

[He loves you, maybe. But in bed? I’M the one he can’t get enough of.]

The day my mother-in-law’s heart gave out, my husband’s mistress texted me that.

I forwarded it straight to Dominic Chase and added:

[Mom’s dead.]

His mom was always good to me, so I called her Mom too.

His text popped up seconds later:

[Relax babe. She’s just taking care of a physical need. You’re the one I actually love]

[Handle the funeral, babe. I’ll make it right when I get back]

I didn’t reply.

Then my phone lit up. He was calling.

“Look, Skylar’s pregnant. I need to take care of her.

“And since your mom just died, wouldn’t it be better if you stayed with your dad for a year?”

MY mom?

I let out a cold laugh. “How thoughtful.”

His tone went soft.

“Come on, Jo. Pregnancy destroys your body. Skylar’s doing you a favor here.

“And no matter what, you’re still the one I love. You know that—”

I hung up before he could finish. Wiped the tears from my eyes.

Then I dialed his uncle directly.

“Leo? Mrs. Chase just died and left TEN billion behind.Whoever handles her funeral gets it ALL.”

“You interested?”

…

Dominic had been back from his business trip for a week.

But even after the wake ended, he never showed.

Every excuse was the same—

Skylar’s morning sickness, Skylar’s discomfort, Skylar needed him.

Always her.

So I handled everything alone.

I stood at the funeral home, staring at another text where he bailed. My chest ached.

Then I opened Instagram.

There he was—throwing a celebration dinner at some Michelin restaurant.

Champagne glasses raised. Big smiles all around.

All for Skylar’s pregnancy.

Tears rolled down my cheeks.

I couldn’t wait to see his face when he found out whose funeral he’d just missed.

After the service ended, he called.

“Jo, Skylar’s nauseous and she’s craving your pot roast. Come over to Hillcrest.”

He wanted his wife to cook for his pregnant mistress.

I let out a cold laugh. “Dominic. Three years of marriage. Do you even care?”

His tone hardened.

“Jo, look—I know your mom just died and you’re upset. But that’s not an excuse. You know how important this baby is. Don’t make this difficult.”

Three years of marriage.

I thought he was just emotionally clueless and bad at business.

Turns out he couldn’t even stay faithful.

I grabbed the divorce papers and drove straight to Hillcrest Garden.

…

Skylar opened the door with that saccharine smile plastered on her face.

“Jo! Thank God you’re here. I was about to order takeout—such a pain!”

Dominic appeared behind her and tucked a strand of hair behind her ear.

“You’re such a handful. Had to drag my wife over just to feed you.”

That tenderness in his eyes—I used to think it was only for me.

I shoved the divorce papers at him.

“Sign these. Hope you two have a WONDERFUL life together.”

Dominic froze.

Skylar’s eyes went wide. She started waving her hands frantically.

“Jo, no! I don’t even want the food anymore! Please don’t divorce him!”

She pushed Dominic toward me, her voice dripping with concern.

“Dominic, go home with Jo. Don’t upset her. I’ll be fine on my own. I can take care of the baby myself.”

She rested a hand on her still-flat stomach and looked down like some tragic movie character.

Dominic’s expression softened instantly.

He shoved me toward the kitchen and pulled her close.

“Jo, I don’t care what you’re trying to pull. Make the pot roast. If anything happens to Skylar or this baby because you’re throwing a tantrum, you’ll regret it.”

I looked up at him through blurry eyes.

“You want your WIFE to cook for your MISTRESS? What makes you so sure I won’t poison her?”

His voice went cold. He stared at me like I was nobody.

“You won’t.”
