Not sure how these dynamics work out
Hi everyone. I'm a 20 yo living in the US. Currently finishing up college (almost a senior) and I've recently met a guy at this clinic I go to (I'm a patient, he works there). It's honestly super difficult finding someone who matches your standards here in the US where it's really diverse in terms of culture and religion, but this guy (looks around early 20s) checks many of the boxes (same culture, religion, language, phenotype, work field, character). I also feel like for one of the first times ever this is reciprocated. I don't see a reason why any reasonable person would reject him.
My parents are really strict to the point where I know I'll get slut shamed for even mentioning a guy, and they'll most definitely kill me if they know any guy spoke to me or even just breathed in my direction. I've never expressed interest in guys and I've told them about my antinatalist views (open to adopting while following Islamic guidelines though). My parents think marriage is useless without kids. They see it as a whole package.
I'm pursuing the medical school path, which means that realistically, I won't have a stable career or much independence until I'm 30+ yo. My parents never really told me about any potential suitors but I've also never been interested in them bringing me someone I've never met from back home. I don't like the whole idea of them sending pics of me to outsiders like I'm at a meat market. My father also knows that's how it works and he doesn't like the idea of it either. At the same time, if I bring up anyone, my parents are going to impose more restrictions on me about going outside (they already do and it's taken a psychological toll, I have to sneak out for some of the programs I'm in at college; really innocent things that I have to do for my applications). My relationship with them is also not the best. I get my work/chores done. We don't talk. It's yes, no, or idk. Otherwise I either have someone start an argument with me or try to mock me.
There's another slightly older hijabi where he works, she's his colleague. Already married and has 2 young children. I felt her trying to get us to be at the same place at the same time but honestly even if he were using her to get my father's contact (he genuinely doesn't make eye contact much with girls unless he's speaking about the procedure and whatnot; is also really reserved but is also working with a lot of girls so it makes sense- it's just rare in the west), it would make me look bad to my parents if they receive a random phone call and I'd be worried for my safety at home. Especially since I go to this clinic alone and no, my parents don't have time to go with me and my only brother is younger and really immature. All our relatives are in the middle east and our relationship is pretty distant. My parents are also most definitely going to tell me how this is just a distraction.
For context, I'm Arab and my parents themselves got married in their late teens-mid 20s. They're late 30s-mid 40s now.
I'm wondering, for anyone with similar experiences (Ex. super conservative parents in the US; no they would ever allow muslim dating apps), were you even able to get married? Was it really someone you wanted to be with or did you just end up with whoever your parents strung along late 20s- early 30s from their siblings' pressure and questions? Sometimes it feels like I'd rather be single forever than end up with whomever. And I'd be scared to be with someone from back home because then I'd go from one controlling environment to another.
