Ally AI feels suicidal?

This might just be an unintended effect of how many squads spawn for the enemy on expert, but every defense mission that I take seems to involve the ally squads just doing bizarre movements. Like they constantly run out of cover/the base into the open where they almost instantly get pinned and murdered by the enemies that move in.

It definitely feels like the ally AI needs some tuning or a specific defense/hold out priority for these missions where they just focus on staying in cover and suppressing/smoking to stay alive.
