I feel so lost and empty. My GF (32F) broke up with me (30M) then confessed after we reconnected after little over a week that she slept with someone during the breakup and now regrets it.
I’m a 30M and my girlfriend (32F) of about 1.5 years recently broke up with me during what seemed like an existential crisis. She had just started a new job and was under a lot of stress about her life direction. One of her biggest worries has always been her age and the fear that if she doesn’t have a baby soon, she might never have one.
We had talked about this before and agreed that having kids right now wasn’t the right time. We both felt our relationship still needed more time to grow, and I also wanted to become more financially stable before taking on that kind of responsibility.
Because of the pressure she was feeling, she decided to break up with me. Her reasoning was that she felt our relationship “wasn’t going anywhere” and she didn’t want to put her life on hold waiting. She also has a tendency to withdraw into her own bubble when she’s stressed, which has always made me feel a bit helpless.
About a week after the breakup we reconnected. She had been staying with her mum for a few days, and when she got back I asked her out to dinner to see how she was doing. We’re not officially back together, I told her I need time to process everything, but the evening went well and she said she felt like breaking up might have been a mistake.
During that conversation she confessed something that really shocked me. While we were broken up, she went on a date with someone and ended up sleeping with him. Technically we weren’t together, so I know it isn’t cheating, but it still hit me pretty hard.
She said she was very emotional at the time, under a lot of pressure from people around her asking about kids, and struggling after the breakup. She says she regrets it and she even said she understands if I don’t want anything to do with her anymore.
On top of that, she’s been anxious because her period hasn’t started yet during her birth control break. She showed me a pregnancy test that was negative, but she’s still worried. I suggested we go to the GP just to make sure everything is okay.
I still care about her a lot and genuinely want to support her, but this revelation has left me feeling empty and lost. Before the breakup I had noticed she was becoming distant and less interested in intimacy, and now I can’t help wondering if this other person might have already been in the picture. I asked her if she was talking to this person while we were together she assured she did nothing like that behind my back.
I thought she might be the one the more time I spent together in the relationship, which makes this even harder to process.
I guess my question is: how do I even approach this situation? How would you handle this situation if you were in my position? I am also a bit concerned about her well being incase we did decided to part ways for good.
Any advice would really be helpful.
