My 5yo still can’t read and the school says “give it time” but I’m losing my mind
My daughter just turned six and she still can’t recognize basic sight words. Like, we’re talking cat, dog, the words kindergarteners are supposed to know. Her teacher keeps saying some kids are late bloomers and not to worry but I AM worried because we’re halfway through first grade and she’s so far behind.
We practice every single night for at least thirty minutes and it’s like the words don’t stick in her brain. She’ll recognize “said” on one page then see it again two pages later and have zero clue. I’ve tried phonics apps, flashcards, those BOB books everyone swears by, reading together before bed. Nothing clicks.
Her little brother who’s four can already sound out simple words which makes me feel even worse. I contacted a supplier on amazon and alibaba months ago about ordering magnetic letter tiles in bulk because I thought maybe a tactile approach would help but honestly I don’t even know anymore.
The school did some basic screening and said she doesn’t qualify for any intervention services because she’s “not far enough behind.” How is that even possible? Meanwhile I’m watching her self-esteem tank because she knows the other kids are reading chapter books while she struggles with three-letter words.
I bought every kids educational toy marketed for early literacy and our house looks like a learning store exploded. My husband thinks I’m being too intense but he’s not the one doing homework battles every night. I just want her to succeed.
