Is it safe to live in 10th district Vienna as a student?

Has anyone lived in Karmarschgasse, in the 10th District, as a student? I've heard a lot of scary stories about the 10th District. Is it true, or can you chill at home in peace? I am asking cause it has the cheapest apartments available within the city centre. How much is the rent, and what's the experience like overall?
