school counselors should just stick to making schedules

TW: Anxiety / Depression

I was diagnosed with depression around Easter last year. I did this behind my parents back, still a minor, and then they wouldn't medicate me because they didn't have consent from my parents. I couldn't go to therapy either because I don't have rides weekly and just disappearing for an hour each week would cause a lot of suspicion.

Before that, I went to the counselor. They fucking shrugged at me when I asked if I was going to get rescinded from the university I got into. They said without my parent's consent, there was nothing that could be done for me. Called my parents anyway. Reminded me to stop skipping class. Sent me along the way because "I shouldn't skip too much class time".

I'm saying this as a generally academically successful student, but as long as you meet graduation requirements, they don't give a shit about you. The first time I was sent to the counselor, my AP Physics teacher was concerned that my performance and conduct had dropped severely compared to previous years, and the counselors laughed it off to my face (I did laugh and try to dismiss it too but it was just awkward. I don't know what else I would've done, and this was before I was willing to consider the idea that I was depressed) because the las time they saw me was to add another AP to my schedule.

Every single paper they hand out twice a semester says to talk to trusted adults, talk to your counselor, ask for help, whatever. The teacher sent me to the counselor who sent me to the psychiatrist who sent me to my parents who yelled the shit out of me for acting like a depressed person. Stop giving kids false hope that there are even "trusted adults" to confide in at school. If you can't trust your parents, you can't trust anyone that interacts with you as their job. Just wait till you're 18 to get any real help, or keep ranting to ChatGPT if you're not looking to vent to your friends.
