What happens when you don't know how to spell a word in Mandarin?

In English or other Latin scripts you can sort of guess your way through a word. And even if it's wrong people it's usually at least be pronounced phonetically so readers can guess. But what happens when you don't know how to spell a word in Mandarin? Do you leave it blank? Give it a shot?
