Use case: M5 32GB vs. M5 Pro 24GB
Hi guys,
I need some advice switching from Windows to Mac, my current laptop (Lenovo Legion 5 Pro, over 4 years old) is due for a replacement, I'm keen on switching to Mac. What I plan to use it for:
- Web development using phpStorm, trying to dip into Xcode as well to make apps with simple ad-free games for my kids
- Running about 5-10 docker containers with a full dev stack (Apache/MySQL) -> this is my main focus
- Doing music production (Ableton Live, usually have around 50 tracks per song on average) -> on Windows this tends to be very processor intesenive, not sure about macOS on this.
- Light photo editing using Photoshop/Affinity and some light magazine editing using inDesign/Affinity
- Office work (Word, Excel, Outlook etc.) and MS Teams / Citrix. Maybe running some stuff on Parallels
My setup uses two 4K monitors running at 60Hz, I might switch in these for one 49" Odyssey G9 running 5120x1440 at 144Hz somewhere soon.
I don't plan on doing any gaming or video editing, I wish to use the device as my main machine for about 6 years. If I like it, I will also buy a Mac Studio somewhere in the coming 2 years.
So what I'm considering is the M5 with 32GB of RAM (which is €2609 here) or the new M5 Pro with the 15/15 config, with 24GB of ram (which is €2729). This included the nano texture screen.
Things for me to consider are the upgraded CPU (18/20) for €200 or extra RAM (48GB) for €500. It's not that I'm extremely tight on budget, but I'm also not looking for overkill.
What would you guys pick on this use case?
