My (33M) Heart is Breaking Over a Future I Can No Longer See with the Woman I Adore (33F)

Dating & Relationships [Wed/Fri] (Women Only)

Hello, Reddit. I’m writing this because I’m lost in a way I’ve never been before. I need perspectives from outside my own head, which has become a pretty dark place lately.

The Foundation

I’ve been with my wife since we were 20. We’ve been married for five years, but our story is 13 years long. She is, without a doubt, the love of my life. My world has revolved around her and my work for as long as I can remember. I’m a high-functioning, driven person, and I pour everything I have into the things I care about. To compensate for my long work hours, I’ve always made sure the time we have together is just for her. I have her handwriting tattooed on my skin. That’s the kind of love this is.

From the beginning, I knew we weren’t perfectly compatible physically, but the depth of my love for her made it feel like a small sacrifice. I wasn’t ready for marriage when we tied the knot, but the thought of her being sad was more painful than any of my own fears or insecurities. Her happiness was my priority, always. And she has been my rock, supporting me in every way imaginable. I’ve done my best to build a beautiful, happy life for her in return. Our home has always had a happy vibe; I know she’s been happy.

The Cracks

Turning 30 changed me. The physical incompatibility, which I had pushed aside for a decade, started to eat away at me. It wasn’t just physical anymore; it became a mental burden. I was filled with self-doubt. Was it me? Was I not enough to turn her on? I tried talking to her about it, many times, but we never found a solution. The conversations just…fizzled out.

In a misguided search for validation, I turned to Reddit. I spoke to other women—never NSFW, just conversations. I was transparent with my wife about it. I told her both times it happened, and I told her how much I hated that I was doing it. I didn’t understand myself. We had long, difficult talks about it, but life and work got in the way, and the root issue was never resolved.

Then, last year, my world shattered. I discovered she’d been having NSFW chats with a man she knew through a friend. It was passionate, it was physical, and it broke me. When I confronted her, she came clean. She said she did it because I had been talking to strangers, and since she couldn’t bring herself to do that, she turned to someone she knew.

The Impasse

I still love her. That’s the torturous part. My family adores her. My brothers see her as a sister. I genuinely want her to have a life full of happiness. But I’m stuck.

The thought of having a child with her, which should be a dream, feels impossible now. And it’s not just because of the chat; it’s a deeper feeling I can’t shake. My productivity has plummeted. I’m trapped in horrible, looping thoughts that I can’t break free from. I have no social life, no friends I can talk to about this. The house we built together feels like it’s hers, not ours.

I feel like I need to leave to save myself, but the thought of being without her, of causing her sadness, is unbearable. I don’t want to ruin the happiness of our families. I’ve analyzed every possible scenario, every permutation and combination, but I can’t find a way forward.

I’m stuck between leaving the woman I love more than anything and staying in a life that feels like it’s slowly crushing me. How do you choose between two impossible options?
