is the protagonist always gendered the same or does steam have gender settings?

this is basically my first steam game. im asking cause i remember looking in the steam settings if there was some kind of gender signifier and all i found was people saying "why would steam ask your gender/they dont do that to provide more anonymity cause steam is based" and stuff like that but with the dialogue and the fact the two cats that had my steam handle are the correct gender i keep questioning if maybe i missed something

if it's just a coincidence and the dialogue is always the same i spose ive lost that particular anonymity but i am curious :P
