Commonly Recognizable Faces in Historical Art

Discussion

There are some historical figures that always seem instantly recognizable, even when they’re blended into the background of a large painting with many other individuals (who often congeal into an amorphous mass of one powdered wig after another). I’m not talking about distinguished kings or presidents who are intentionally assigned the center stage by the artist, but rather those individuals painted more discreetly into the scenery yet consistently jump into the foreground due to their unique physical traits that catch the eye.

I was contemplating examples of this and I realized that the Prince of Talleyrand and Benjamin Franklin never fail to grab my attention, even when they’re not featured as the focal point of a painting. They both do have distinctive appearances: Talleyrand is usually rendered with a white cravat fastened tightly beneath his chin, and a facial expression worrisome for fecal impaction. Franklin on the other hand is readily discernable by his jolly and portly physique, diminutive spectacles and bald head (when everyone else is wearing a wig).

I’ve included some examples below: Of note, certain figures like George Washington and Napoleon Bonaparte also jump out, but that’s besides the point because they’re supposed to be recognizable.

Let me know if you can think of other examples of this phenomenon. Lesser known historical figures that somehow steal the show from whatever painting they’re depicted in.
