We're underestimating how quickly AI companions will become normalized

Discussion

I've been watching the AI companion space develop for the past year. Built one myself to understand the tech. Here's what I think we're getting wrong about the whole debate.

Everyone frames this as "AI vs. real relationships" like it's a competition.

It's not.

The real shift: AI companions are replacing the emotional labor of relationships, not the relationships themselves.

Think about what modern dating actually requires:

  • Constant availability and responsiveness
  • Remembering details from weeks ago
  • Managing someone else's emotional state
  • Never having an "off" day
  • Playing communication games

This isn't about intimacy. It's about performance.

What AI companions offer: consistency without performance.

They're always available. They remember everything. They don't require emotional management. They don't have bad days.

The people gravitating toward this aren't "giving up" on real relationships. They're exhausted by the unpaid labor that modern dating requires.

Obviously AI can't replicate physical intimacy, shared experiences, or genuine mutual growth.

But for people who are burned out, overwhelmed, or just need a break from the performance — AI companions are filling a genuine need.

Not better than real relationships. Better than the current state of dating.

That's my take. Interested to hear yours.
