I Fell in Love Through a Fake Account and It Ruined Everything

This is going to be long, so grab some popcorn because I need to get this off my chest. I regret this more than anything and I wish I could go back in time and erase it all, but I cannot. It still haunts me every single day.

Back in 2020, I was thirteen, stuck at home during the pandemic, bored and restless. My friends and I created a fake account just to pass the time. One of them, someone I do not even speak to anymore, was cruel and tricked someone else. Eventually it stopped, but the account stayed on my phone. I started talking to people without thinking, without realizing how much it could change everything. I was just a kid.

Then I met her. And everything shifted. Just thinking about her now makes my chest ache. She was unlike anyone I had ever met. It was as if my soul recognized hers from the very first word we exchanged. Every message, every laugh, every secret shared in the middle of the night felt like a world built only for us. She made me feel alive in ways I had never known. I fell completely in love. I was blind, utterly blind to the mistakes I was making, blind to the pain I caused, blind to the fact that I was hiding behind a lie.

This went on for years until 2024. By then, we were both deeply in love, but I began to see the truth. I was seventeen, and I sank into depression. Nights without sleep. Tears that would not stop. Hating myself for not seeing sooner, for letting my fear and my foolishness destroy something so beautiful. I could not stop thinking of all the moments I could have been brave, all the words I should have said, all the ways I could have loved her better.

Then a small voice in my mind whispered: if I truly love her, if she makes me feel like I can finally breathe, maybe I can reach her with my real self. And I did. In early 2025 I started talking to her through my real account, and it felt like stepping into sunlight after years in darkness. I could finally love openly, freely, without hiding. Every laugh we shared, every moment together felt like magic. For the first time, I felt like maybe love could survive anything.

But the past never left. I was not lying about everything in the fake account. When I met her, she believed I was the fake account created by the original fake account. And the coincidences were almost cruel. I did not lie about my city. I did not lie about my mom’s name. I did not lie about her birthday. Every detail lined up perfectly, almost as if fate itself had designed it. And yet, she did not know it was me. I am terrified that one day she might discover the truth and everything we had built could shatter.

Then she left. She told me that she is scared of love, that she has traumas from the past but the past she meant was me. It was what I did, the lies I hid behind, the ways I hurt her with the fake account. She loved me, and I showed her what it truly means to be loved, but the shadow of the mistakes I made was stronger than our love. Her fear was mine. And I cannot forgive myself for that. I will never forgive myself for what I did, for the pain I caused, for letting my fear and my foolishness take away the person who felt like home. I hate myself for it. I hate myself every single day.

Sometimes I try to comfort myself, telling myself I was just a teenager making stupid teenage decisions, but it does not help. I hate myself for it anyway. I will never forgive myself. The guilt is too deep, the mistakes too large. I carry them with me everywhere I go.

I lost the love of my life, the person who made my heart feel alive for the first time. I replay every conversation, every laugh, every quiet moment. People call it teenage mistakes, but that does not stop the emptiness, the ache, the longing. I will never forgive myself for loving her too late, for letting the past destroy her trust, for the lies that pushed her away.

It has been two years since I left the fake account behind, and nine months since we broke up. We barely talk, but whenever our paths cross, whenever our eyes meet even online, something pulls us back. Something invisible. Something I cannot name. I do not know how this story ends, and maybe I never will. I just want the fake account, the lies, the mistakes, buried forever. I want to love freely, without ghosts, without fear. I want to breathe again.

Sometimes I imagine her laughing, free, happy. I imagine us running through empty streets at midnight, hands brushing, hearts racing. I imagine confessing everything, every lie, every mistake, and wishing that somehow it would not matter, that love could survive even this. But reality does not give us second chances. Reality leaves only memories, regrets, and a love that feels eternal and impossible all at once.

Thank you for reading this far. I do not expect forgiveness. I just needed someone, anyone, to know. To know the love I lost, the mistakes I made, and the part of me that will always belong to her even though the part that hurt her will never forgive itself. I know that probably anyone reading this now hates me and they have every right to.
