My dad is sabotaging my job applications because he wants me to work for him
I'm 24M applying for jobs in my field (graphic design). I keep getting to final interviews then suddenly getting rejected with no explanation.
Found out my dad has been calling these companies claiming to be a "former supervisor" giving terrible references about me!
He wants me to work at his construction company instead. I have a degree in design! He says "That's a waste, real men do real work!"
When I confronted him he admitted it! Said he's "saving me from wasting my potential" and I should be "grateful he's guiding my career."
I've never worked for him! How is he giving references?? He's pretending to be supervisors from my actual past jobs!
I had to tell my real previous employers what's happening so they know to clarify if companies call. They're horrified.
I'm applying to jobs in other cities now without telling him. He found out somehow (probably my mom told him) and he's saying if I move away he'll "cut me off completely."
I don't even rely on him financially! He just thinks threatening abandonment will control me.
He's telling relatives I'm "throwing away a good opportunity" to work with him and being "too proud" to do manual labor.
It's not about pride! I have a whole career path and he's destroying it!
