When did 'lead' replace 'led'?

I might have missed the memo, but I keep seeing 'lead' (like the weighty metal) being used instead of 'led' (past tense of the verb 'to lead'), so is this just the convention now?

I mean, it feels like the battle is already lost so I'm not really complaining, just a personal sanity check.
