Grappling as an Opportunity Attack

5e (2024)

I'm a DM and I found out at our session last night that in 2024 RAW, grappling is now allowed as an opportunity attack (provided the player has a free hand). An opportunity attack allows the player to make a melee attack or unarmed strike, and unarmed strike allows the player to grapple.

Honestly I had no idea of this interaction until now and I'm really not a fan. I feel like players are discouraged enough from movement just based on damage taken by opportunity attacks, to add grappling on top of that seems like overkill.

I already have reverted to 2014 for contested rolls instead of saving throws for grappling because it feels more fun and at this point I'm wondering if I should just say all grappling rules will use the 2014 rules.

On the flip side, the only players this really applies to are my monk and my paladin's steed- which gets into a whole other rabbit hole. If we count "natural weapons" as unarmed strikes, my monsters are more likely to benefit from this change than the players. Otherwise, only monks and one-handed martials would benefit.

What do you think of the new grappling rules? Do you use them? If so, how do you like grappling as an opportunity attack?

Edit: I know it’s one or the other. The player is taking the risk that either could happen and might just decide to stay put.
