AITAH for how things ended with my best friend
My ex–best friend and I had been friends for about four years. We were as close as sisters. We would stay at each other’s houses whenever we didn’t want to be at our own because of family problems. If you saw one of us, you would instantly see the other — that’s the kind of friendship we had.
During summers, we didn’t hang out much because we were usually out of the country at camps or working. But when school started again, we would always go back to being inseparable.
For some background: we’re in the same grade but in different classes. Her classmates used to talk badly about her behind her back, but then act friendly to her face. I didn’t like that, so I told them off.
When school started this time, we began hanging out again like usual. But after a month or two, I started feeling a strange vibe from her. She would try to embarrass me in front of other people and constantly argue with me over small, unnecessary things. It felt off, but I didn’t understand why.
Then one day, her dog got run over. She sent me a voice message telling me what happened. I immediately asked her, “How can I help you?” I also offered to pick her up or let her come stay at my house for a while.
She ignored me.
I decided to make her a small care box with her favorite snacks and drinks and dropped it off at her house. She saw me — but ran away. I assumed she just needed space and wanted to be alone.
A few days later, she came back to school. She didn’t talk to me and completely ignored me. I texted her asking if everything was okay. She said no. I asked her if she still wanted to be friends because of how she had been acting. She said no.
When I asked why, she replied, “You’re crazy for asking how you can help.”
While we were having this conversation over text, we were both walking to the store. She was about 150 meters in front of me with a big group of people, showing them our private messages on her phone and replying to me while they all watched. I was walking alone behind them.
After that, everything ended. We haven’t spoken since.
I still feel weird about the whole situation. I don’t understand if I did something wrong by asking how I could help her, or if her classmates — the same ones who used to talk badly about her — influenced her. Now they’re her “best friends.”
