Spain Travel Hack: The "Combinado Cercanías" Secret (Save €15+ on Every High-Speed Trip)

Planning to take the high-speed train (AVE or Iryo) between Madrid, Barcelona, or Seville in 2026? 🚄

Most travelers spend an extra €5–€10 on a taxi or a separate metro ticket to get to the main train station. Don't do that.

The Secret: Combinado Cercanías If you have a long-distance Renfe ticket (AVE/Alvia), you are entitled to a FREE local commuter train (Cercanías) ticket on both ends of your journey.

How to use it:

Look for the 'Combinado Cercanías' code on your PDF ticket.

Go to any red Cercanías machine at the airport (Madrid T4) or local stations.

Select 'Combinado Cercanías' and scan your QR code.

Result: A free ticket to the main hub (Atocha/Sants) and another free one at your destination.

Why this matters in 2026: With the new low-cost high-speed operators like Ouigo and Iryo competing, some people forget that Renfe still offers this 'all-in-one' mobility. If you are staying in the suburbs or coming from the airport, this hack saves a family of four about €30–€40 easily.

Spanaly Tip: Always check your ticket for this code! It’s valid 3 hours before your departure and 3 hours after you arrive. It’s the smoothest way to navigate the 'last mile' of your trip for €0.

Safe travels! Ask me anything about the Spanish rail system below.
