New Firm

Career Advice

So, I've been working at my current firm for a couple of months. If you've seen my post history you'll probably guess that this was coming.

I work in a litigation based firm right now, and I saw a position open up for an estates firm. I have an interview this weekend with the new firm atty.

The new firm is a lot smaller in nature compared to this one, so there won't be a problem of married partner power dynamics.

I sent in my resume that hasn't been updated to reflect my current position and somehow still made it to an interview round. I was wondering if it's a good idea to mention that I do currently work in a legal firm and I was thinking of switching firms since I'm early in my career and exposure to different practice areas would be good for me to make decisions about which field I would wanna work in permanently. Also, I thought it might be a good idea to mention since I can show that I have some experience. I do good work at my current firm, and any mistake has always been followed up with my initiative to do better. But, one of my coworkers said that this job isn't a stable one, since firings can happen on the spot depending on the emotional state of an atty regardless of if you've had good performance (one of our longest standing staff has only been here for 6 months if that goes to show how quick employees get fired and hired).

I'm not going to do any bad-mouthing about my current firm, but I don't know if it would cost me to mention I've only been there for two months before wanting to switch over. I'm also super worried that if the new firm atty gets like curious she'll talk to my current firm partners and they'll retaliate against me.

To be honest, I'm not sure how to navigate any of this. I know I do good work at my firm but I haven't been able to make life plans because I'm scared that I'll be randomly fired. I've literally started putting every paycheck into my savings and counting how many months I'll be good to be unemployed if I do get randomly fired. I haven't been spending on anything and I'm grateful I don't even have to pay for groceries because my parents are kind enough to help me out every two weeks. I haven't gotten gas in like 3 weeks because I don't want to spend my paycheck on gas that doesn't take me to and from the office in case I get fired. Again, it's just important to note that even if I'm doing good work, an emotional day for one of the attys could mean I'm out.

Any thoughts? Any advice?
