The United States finds itself once again at war in the Middle East — not because of an imminent threat that demanded immediate action, but because a president decided that military force could achieve what diplomacy, patience, and decades of failed policy could not. The current U.S.-led campaign of airstrikes against Iran, executed in close coordination with Israel, is being sold in fragments: regime change one day, preemption the next, deterrence the day after. Yet beneath the shifting rationales lies a single, uncomfortable truth: this is a war of choice launched without a plan, without congressional authorization, without a coherent objective, and, most damningly, without regard for what comes next.

The opening days of this conflict have already produced images and reports that should shame any nation claiming to act in the name of security. Civilian deaths in Iran, hundreds confirmed, including scores of children killed when a school was struck. Retaliatory Iranian missiles and drones landing not only on American bases but on economic hubs across the Gulf, even striking a civilian hotel in Dubai. Stock markets tumbling. Energy prices spiking. And in the most revealing signal of disarray, the U.S. government’s extraordinary instruction to American citizens in the region: leave immediately, on your own dime, via whatever commercial flights remain. No chartered planes. No military escorts. No coordinated evacuation. Just Godspeed.

This is not the posture of a superpower executing a meticulously designed operation. It is the posture of improvisation masquerading as strength.

What is most striking is the contrast between the military preparation and the political void. The strikes themselves were clearly planned for months: satellite imagery, targeting packages, synchronized Israeli-American operations. Yet no one appears to have seriously prepared for the day after. No plan for civilian protection. No plan for stabilizing a post-strike Iran. No plan even for managing the predictable Iranian response that Tehran had openly telegraphed for years. The administration’s own spokespeople cannot agree on what victory would look like, because victory was never the goal: action was.

The deeper tragedy lies in what this war abandons. The Iranian people — among the most literate, culturally sophisticated, and technologically capable populations in the region — have risen repeatedly over the past two decades demanding dignity, freedom, and a normal life. Each time, their own regime has crushed them. Each time, the United States has offered rhetorical support (“we have your back”) and then delivered nothing. Now, bombs fall in the name of “liberating” them, delivered by the very nations whose past interventions helped entrench the theocracy in the first place. The notion that Iranians will greet foreign airstrikes as salvation is not merely naive; it is insulting to a proud people who have never accepted subjugation, whether from within or without.

This administration appears to believe it has cracked the code of regime change: decapitate the leadership, cut a deal with the next “pragmatic” figure in line, secure access to oil and acquiescence on missiles and proxies. It is the Venezuela fantasy applied to a far more complex, resilient, and layered society. Iran is not a brittle autocracy waiting for one well-placed strike. It is a theocracy with multiple redundant structures of succession, a deep culture of resistance, and a population that has endured sanctions, isolation, and repression for generations. Airstrikes will not produce a Berlin Wall moment; they are far more likely to produce a rallying effect, hardening resolve and entrenching hardliners.

Worse still, the war risks validating the most cynical reading of American power in the region: might makes right, international law is optional, and outcomes are dictated not by justice or self-determination but by whoever possesses the largest arsenal on any given Tuesday. When the president’s advisors speak openly of having “no stupid rules of engagement,” when allies are told they are irrelevant unless they fall in line, when the rules-based order the United States itself designed is casually discarded, the message to Moscow, Beijing, and every other capital is unmistakable: gloves off. If the United States can bomb without justification, others will claim the same prerogative.

The Iranian people deserve better than to be pawns in someone else’s demonstration of resolve. The American people deserve better than to be dragged into another open-ended conflict sold on slogans and abandoned when the headlines fade. And the region deserves better than the chaos that inevitably follows when hubris collides with history.

This is not leadership. This is recklessness dressed in the language of strength. And unless a path to de-escalation and genuine diplomacy is found quickly — one that finally places the dignity and rights of ordinary Iranians at the center rather than as an afterthought — the only certainty is that more graves will be dug, more markets will crash, and more trust in American purpose will erode.

The bombs are still falling. The question is no longer whether we can stop them. It is whether we still possess the wisdom to want to.
