Can an abdominal abscess from perforated appendicitis come back after drainage + antibiotics?

Physician Responded

My mother (52 y/o female, 5’5”, 145 lbs) went to the hospital recently for abdominal pain assuming she was having a kidney stone. Turns out it was her appendix, and some time during her 14 hour wait in the waiting room overnight, her appendix perforated. They gave her nothing but Tylenol in the waiting room. It took another 8 hours after the scan that confirmed the perforation for her to actually get into surgery, where they sent her home with antibiotics she told them she couldn’t tolerate. As the days went by the pain came back, and after some more nonsense, they found an abscess. Took nearly another week before that was resolved. First she had to wait for it to grow better borders for drainage, then they basically starved her for three days because they kept pushing her off the board for surgery because “you’re healthy, other people are sicker.” They drained the fluid and placed a JP drain, which had next to no output for a day or so before they just removed it because it stopped holding suction and she was apparently fine. She was on IV antibiotics the entire time in the hospital waiting for surgery, and finished an oral course at home. This was around a month or so ago. Since then she’s been fine, but around a week ago the pain came back in the same spot. She’s worried the abscess is back, and we’re waiting on a CT scan that could be days away. She’s incredibly healthy otherwise, no conditions or medications other than the Advil she’s been taking to help the pain in her abdomen. She has no other symptoms to speak of, but at the same time it’s hard to tell with her. She’s got a crazy high pain tolerance, she went about her entire day while her appendix was hours away from bursting with pain that would’ve had anyone else on the ground in tears. She only went to the hospital after I basically dragged her there.

Can this happen? If it can, is this common?? And in exactly the same spot?? I’m just trying to get some more information if possible, any studies or links would be great too. Thank you
