Leftist infighting regarding world leaders
Hey everyone. I just want to preface this by saying that I have many ideas about leftism and progress that I've bounced around with friends and family, but this is my first time actually writing some of it down, let alone sharing it to a large audience. Is reddit the best place for this? Probably not, but I am very interested in hearing varied opinions or critiques of both my writing and my ideas, so have at it everybody.
When I say infighting, I don't mean people arguing over how communism/anarchism/socialism/whatever ideology actually works. I personally believe that this kind of discussion, no matter how venomous it may be, is actually really important to establishing goals for ourselves as a movement (this could be why the left in the U.S. has failed so far, there is not a strong consensus of how you actually do leftism, but I digress).
The infighting that's been driving me up the wall as of late has been the endless argument over whether world leader X (past or present) is a good or bad person.
Examples of what I mean.
"Ali Khamenei was a dictator who brutalized his own people! it is good he's dead!"
vs
"Ali Khamenei stood against western imperialism/zionism! it's bad he's dead!"
"Stalin was a champion of the working class and defended communism from nazis!"
vs
"Stalin committed the Holodomor and was just as bad as Hitler!"
I could list more, Lenin, Castro, Xi, Mao, Maduro, etc etc etc.
What irritates me is why any of us as self proclaimed leftists actually care about any of these people. Socialism, communism, revolutions, etc, aren't products of any one man, these things require cooperation among large groups of people. The fact that we've blown these people up as either horrible dictators or champions against imperialism or of the working class eerily echoes the right wing idea of the great man, that somehow history and thus society is defined by the actions of a few innately influential men. They aren't members of the working class, they aren't oppressed, they aren't our peers, they aren't our friends, if anything they are celebrities, dead or alive, past or present. A society cannot be run by a single individual, it requires the labor and skill of all of its constituents, we as leftists should know this, its why we don't fucking like the capitalist class. We should be concerned about ourselves, the workers, the masses, the people who actually get shit done, we should be freeing ourselves from oppression and empowering ourselves to progress as a society. We don't need Stalin or Lenin, Mao or Xi, or any other icon to tell us how to do that for the same reason we don't need any CEO to tell us how to live and work. We are more than capable of creating progress ourselves. It's high time we de-center leftism from any one individual or set of individuals. This is our movement, we deserve to have ownership of it.
