Am I overreacting? Did he compare us?

My bf (M26) and I (F22) were going to get a sweet treat last week and I wanted Nutella with the sweet treat and he said he didn’t want Nutella and we were going to share but I said “okay I’ll tell them to only put it on half of it” and he said “no nevermind I don’t want it anymore, you can have it” and then eventually I said no it’s fine I don’t want it anymore either because I wanted him to eat with me. A few moments passed and then he starts telling me about how I want to get skinny but I keep eating ‘junk’ food. Mind you, I was on my period and I had really bad cramps for the past few days and I was also craving chocolate. After he made that comment, I just fell silent because for the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to get back into going to the gym by waking up early and completing my workout. He knows this but in that moment when he made the comment I couldn’t help but think that whatever I do, to him it isn’t enough. Eventually we leave the area without any dessert and as we are walking back to the car he brings up my younger sister and how she’s managed to lose weight (everyone had already been talking about it and how she had managed to do it so quickly). He said (and I quote) “look at her (my younger sister) she said she wanted to lose weight and she did it. At least when she says she’s going to do something she puts her mind to it.” And that stung. I had just been compared to my younger sister the week prior by my dad and now hearing it come from my own boyfriend was something I didn’t expect. I was upset about his comment before but hearing him say that, made me even more upset.

Eventually we tried talking it out but I was getting overwhelmed and I said to him that he compared me to her and it made me sad and he said that he was just using her as an example and then afterwards he began to say, “what’s so wrong if I did compare you to her? Doesn’t it make you want to work harder and prove me wrong?” After that, he also asked me if I’m ambitious and that he doesn’t want to be with someone who isn’t ambitious (I’ve been with him since I was 18). I told him that I felt like whatever I do isn’t enough for him and I told him I’ve been trying to go to the gym and shouldn’t that count for something? I’m slowly building a routine for myself after falling off multiple times. Once I asked that he just replied with, “but you’re not consistent. You have good weeks and bad weeks. You need to be consistent with it.” And of course I know that, but things get in the way, I become unmotivated etc but I always pick myself back up again and shouldn’t that count?

Anyway, back onto the matter, after talking he told me he still doesn’t think he compared us but I still felt that way and I can’t stop thinking about it. I want to tell someone but I feel so embarrassed. And although he apologised for saying it (I had to ask him to), I can’t help but feel less loved after that. He and everyone else in my family says I’m a sook and I’m overly sensitive so I can’t help but wonder if I’m overreacting?
