90k Workers Compensation Settlement

I've been providing for an 83 year old heavy set man for the last 4 years. About 6 months ago, I tried picking him up from the bathtub and I heard a loud pop in my lower back and instant sharp pain. I've pulled my back out before but never like this! I tried calling IHSS to file a workers comp claim but I couldn't deal with the 2 hour hold times. A family friend recommended a workers comp attorney and I just got a call this morning that the insurance company wants to settle for 90k. The attorney told me that the employer cannot retaliate at me for filing a workers comp claim but I am still worried. Has anyone had a workers compensation claim against IHSS before and has been negatively affected by it?
