If I leave before the lease ends, do I owe whatever is left on the lease, or just enough rent to cover the notice period? (NC)

Might be a dumb question but I'm a first time renter.

My lease is ending soon, but I want more time to look for a house.

If I renewed it and moved out a few months afterward, do I owe the rest of the year? Or do I just owe for the notice period?
