I just got a referral (in college) because my professor didn’t get that I was joking

💼 Education/Employment

I’m an early childhood education major so it’s mostly pretty chill but my professor for my social studies education class insists we talk about current events. Tuesday she of course brought up the Iran stuff except her and everyone else kept saying I-ran not Eeee-ron. So me being me thought it was funny to raise my hand and tell her its Eee-ron not I-ran, you didn’t run anywhere. This was the exact thing my highschool teacher said when we kept mispronouncing it and I thought it was funny. Well this professor did not because she looked at me and said very seriously that I could have said that nicer. I was very taken aback by this since I was joking and she just spoke to me like I’m a child in front of the whole class. I stayed quiet for the rest of class and just moved on, thinking that was that. But then I got a email after class asking me to meet with her about it, so I went and asked some classmates if I really sounded that bad because I know sometimes my tone is off (autism obvs). All of the classmates said that I didn’t sound bad and they knew I was joking and were surprised by the professor’s reaction. When I met with the professor today I was hoping maybe I could just apologize and clear up the misunderstanding but instead I got smacked with a referral for being extremely rude and inappropriate. The professor said she felt like I was trying to embarrass her and was worried I would act that way while at an elementary school. There was nothing I could say or do to defend myself. It just feels sometimes like people truly hate me for my autistic traits that I can’t control. I kinda just needed to vent but words of wisdom are welcome!
