Must challenge ready bodyguard??

Question here that just came up at league the other night.

Opponent had a ready Chief Powhatan when I played the big Arthur that gives a character the ability to challenge ready characters.

Now that I can challenge anything but they still have a bodyguard on the field, do i still have to swing into that first before any other characters??
