My (33M) girlfriend (27F) might end our relationship this weekend. After two years together I’m wondering if we are fundamentally incompatible or if this can still be saved.

My girlfriend and I have been together for about two years. In many ways we get along very well. When we go out we have fun, we joke a lot, we like the same places, and overall we enjoy spending time together. That part of the relationship has always been very natural.

But over time we have been running into more and more friction.

One of the main things is how we express affection. She often tells me I don’t show enough love. I do try, but my way of showing affection is different. I’m more of a quality time type of person. When we are together I hold her hand, hug her, sometimes give her random kisses, things like that. But she seems to want a lot more physical affection and verbal expression than what comes naturally to me. She also likes things like talking about sexual fantasies through messages or flirting that way, while I’m more someone who shows that in person rather than through texting. Because of this she sometimes ends up feeling unloved even though in my mind I am showing affection.

Another big difference between us is personality. I am very introverted, calm and patient. I rarely get angry and I’m generally very reserved. She is the opposite. She is very extroverted, talks a lot, and gets angry or upset pretty easily. Sometimes I make comments that to me are normal jokes or harmless things I would say to friends or family, and she interprets them as insulting or offensive. When that happens she can get very upset and I end up confused because I genuinely didn’t mean anything bad.

There are also differences around lifestyle and finances. I’m a very structured person and I like planning things long term. My idea was to wait around two more years before marriage so we can save money and start our life in a stable way. My thinking is that if we marry later we could afford a better house and avoid lowering our current lifestyle. She is more the type of person who would rather get married sooner, spend most of the savings on the wedding, and then figure things out afterward.

Recently another topic came up that worried me more. She told me she does not want to work anymore once we have kids and possibly never work again. This surprised me because earlier in the relationship we had talked about both of us continuing to work and build our careers. I understand that raising kids is hard and that there may be a period where one parent focuses more on them, but the idea of permanently not working is something I had never planned for.

Sex has also become a source of tension. She sometimes tells me she didn’t enjoy it or expected something different even though she had not communicated that before. Sometimes she feels like I am not enjoying it enough even when I actually am. There have also been disagreements about things like using condoms or trying certain things I am not comfortable with.

Something that has also been difficult for me is that I tend to tolerate a lot of her personality traits even if they are not my favorite, because I understand that everyone is different. But sometimes I feel like she expects me to change parts of my personality while she doesn’t accept mine the same way.

Despite all of this, we still have good moments together and I do care about her. But lately things feel colder. She told me recently that maybe we don’t share the same goals and that she is not sure about the relationship anymore. We are supposed to talk this weekend and I honestly feel like the relationship might end.

You might ask if I am happy? I am but I am not really a very emotional person, so I value more love in terms of supporting each other, raising a family, get along, of course have sex and building a lifestyle where we have both same goals which unfortunately is what has not been happening lately. and that’s where I am uncomfortable.

My question is this. Is this the type of situation where two people just need to work harder to understand each other and adapt, or does this sound more like two people who might simply be too different in personality and long term goals?

I’m trying to be honest with myself about it and would really appreciate outside perspectives.
