CMV: DBD’s culture has became overly sweaty and hostile for a game that isn’t truly competitive

I have around 1600 hours in Dead by Daylight and played it consistently for years. After taking a break for several months, I recently tried returning to the game.

The things I noticed coming back weren’t entirely new. Dead by Daylight has always had some level of sweatiness and toxicity but the intensity of it now feels significantly worse than I remember.

One thing that stood out immediately was how optimized many matches feel. I understand that people want to win; that’s part of any PvP game, but it feels like a large portion of the player base approaches every match as if it were a high-stakes competitive environment.

What confuses me is that DBD isn’t really structured like a competitive esport. The ranking/MMR system doesn’t offer meaningful rewards, and matches are heavily influenced by factors like map RNG, perk combinations, and team coordination.

Because of this, many matches seem to revolve around the most efficient strategies, such as:

• tunneling

• hook camping

• slugging multiple survivors

I understand that these strategies are technically valid and can increase the chances of winning. My concern is that when they become the default way to play, the match often stops feeling like a tense horror experience and instead feels like an exercise in optimization.

Another issue I’ve noticed over time is the increasingly polarized nature of the community. Discussions about the game often quickly turn into “survivor vs killer” arguments, where any criticism is interpreted as taking one side or the other.

In my experience, this often leads to conversations becoming aggressive, dismissive, or hostile, rather than people engaging with the actual point being made.

My view is that the combination of very optimized gameplay and a highly polarized community culture has made the game much less enjoyable and welcoming, especially for returning or casual players.

To be clear, I’m not arguing that players shouldn’t try to win or that certain strategies should be banned. My question is more about why the culture around the game has become so intense given that the game itself isn’t truly competitive in structure.

I used to love this game but I’m not so sure anymore please CMV.
