[Australia] Is this a scam? I received a text message from “Supreme Court of Victoria”
Hello folks, I received this unusual message:
____________________________
The Supreme Court of Victoria ordered that you receive this notice because you may be a group member in the JB Hi-Fi Class Action about extended warranties sold between 1/1/2011 and 8/12/2023. The deadline to opt out if you don't want to participate is 29 May 2026. No action is required if you want to participate. Read the Opt Out Notice on the Court's website: [REMOVED FOR SAFETY]. To confirm, visit the Court's website by searching 'JB Hi-Fi group proceeding'.

My suspicions and concerns here are:
- I don’t live in Victoria. Never did.
2). It doesn’t mention my name, very impersonal for a legal information.
-
surely a legal letter is required, not a casual and impersonal text message. Seems very unprofessional.
-
they are asking me to OPT OUT rather than opting in. Surely they do not have the legal right in Australia to opt me in without my consent?
I did not click on their link. I’m not sure if this is legit or not. Very unprofessional if it is.
