Am I required to give 30 day notice to roommate?

Hi, my current living situation has become increasingly unsafe due to an unstable aggressive roommate. We are both on the lease. I have talked with my landlord and he was very understanding, just concerned about my safety. He said I don’t need to pay til the end of the lease. We think the best option is just for me to move out asap. He suggested I send a 30 day notice to my roommate once I am in a safe place… Do I need to? I am afraid my roommate may become violent or destructive once he finds out I am moving out.

I found a new apartment and I am submitting an application. It asks if I have already given notice to my current place. I don’t know… my landlord and I are at an understanding I think, but my roommate does not know yet. My mom said I absolutely do not have to give my roommate notice. What am I required to do here, and what do you suggest? What do I say on the application?
