Direct deposit went back to paper checks

For the last 2 pay period we received our check in the mail instead of direct deposit like we have got before. My husband handled our daughter’s care last month to give me a break so he got the hours for last month instead of me. The last time her got payroll for our daughters care was last August and he got his check thru direct depot but this time he received it in the mail the last 2 pay periods. Does him not being active for 6 month cause his paycheck to go back to paper checks?
