Middle Eastern war history book recommendations.

With the current state of things I find myself wanting to better understand past events in the Middle East that has led us to where we are today. I would love reading recommendations covering this topic.

I would prefer a more narrative style versus a textbook feel, but anything that addresses major events and past wars would be great.
