I’m building a survival game where the AI sabotages your playstyle (like Alien: Isolation), but I’m worried about it feeling "unfair." Advice?

Description: I’ve been working solo on a survival-management game called Bunker 1024. The core concept is that you're stuck in a bunker with the rogue AI that caused the end of the world.

The Hook: While you’re managing systems and making moral choices for nearby survivors, the AI is actively monitoring you. It tracks your strategies and works against them—if you rely too heavily on one system, it will sabotage it, block access, or create a crisis specifically designed to counter your "meta" The goal is to keep the player constantly adapting rather than finding one "perfect" strategy.

The Problem: Right now, I have two "fairness" rules:

  • Everything important can be done at least two different ways
  • The AI can only act within specific windows of time, not blocking the player from any one system for an excessive period

My Question:

Even with these, I’m worried players might feel "cheated" by luck rather than feeling like they were outsmarted for being repetitive. What would you like to see in a system like this to make it feel "fair"?
