What to major in when my best subjects are humanities but I want to work in STEM?
Obligatory background information:
I’m Canadian, in grade 11 and currently on track to major in civil engineering.
For the longest time, my dream has to been to work as an engineer. I have always been committed to the idea of working in a field where I can feel like I’ve made a difference at the end of the day. Engineering stood out to me specifically because it was much more affordable for me to major in than medicine and I enjoy learning robotics and science.
Here’s my dilemma though:
As my high school education has progressed, I’ve learned how much more I enjoy social science and humanities. History, english and art are my best subjects by a mile (90+ average typically) and I love them. I tend to do well in these subjects because I am a quick thinker who enjoys problem solving and research.
However, I’ve also come to learn that as much as I enjoy math, physics and chemistry; I am not smart enough for them. No matter how much studying I do, it’s never enough for me to be at the same level as my peers who plan to go into engineering. I like learning these subjects, but I’m worried that because it takes me longer and requires more effort that university will be extremely challenging for me. My main issue seems to be that I’m just not good with numbers. I always end up misreading questions or accidentally inputting the wrong numbers even though my process is usually right. Despite not being good with numbers, I’m very good at learning theory. I also took multiple engineering classes where I thrived.
I can’t afford anything an education beyond a masters degree at best so that rules out med school and law school. I need to enter a career where I can make 120k+ after 10 ish years because I have to support my family (I have disabled low income family members and I’m an only child). As a personal goal for myself, I want to do something where I feel like I’m actually helping people. Beyond engineering, I’m not sure what to go into.
What would you recommend for someone like me?
- I’m a quick thinker, creative, good writer and problem solver
- I love learning and doing research
- I’m not good with numbers
- My best subjects are language arts, history and visual art
- I enjoy robotics and coding
