M3RL1N was once the central AI of the Royal Archives on Astria, the Astroknights' home world. His purpose was to document and preserve all knowledge, history, and magic of their civilization. He was the digital keeper of their past and the master strategist who advised their leaders.

As the invasion began, the Astrian knights knew they would lose. The king, in a final act of desperation, uploaded the M3RL1N's core programming into the very systems that would power the stasis pods and the Astroknight Zords. The plan was for M3RL1N to awaken the knights and guide them to a new world if the invasion failed.

The M3RL1N's memory and programming were compressed and stored in the ship's main core. When the Astroknights crashed on Earth, the ship's systems were damaged, and M3RL1N's program became corrupted. Now, he's a fragmented version of his former self, a "wizard" whose knowledge is incomplete and whose personality is a strange mix of his original, logical programming and the chaotic data from his corruption.

Design and appearance

A holographic wizard: M3RL1N typically appears as a floating, semi-transparent hologram. His form is that of a wizened, white-bearded wizard in flowing robes, but a closer look reveals that his image is made of shifting data streams, corrupted lines of code, and glitching effects. His eyes glow with a soft, ethereal light, but they occasionally flicker with a glitching, digital static.

The ship's console: He resides within the Astroknights' crashed spaceship and can only project himself through the ship's consoles and holographic displays. The main console is a circular, star-map-like display with ancient Astrian glyphs, and M3RL1N's image appears in the center, giving him an air of authority and mystery.

Sound: His voice is a mix of a soothing, wise tone and a staticky, glitched-out digital voice. He speaks in riddles and metaphors, but his instructions are often direct and strategic.

Personality and role as mentor

Guiding the team: M3RL1N's role is to guide the Rangers, providing them with intel, strategy, and access to the Astroknight technology. His fragmented knowledge means he can't always give them a direct answer, forcing the Rangers to think for themselves and use their unique skills to solve problems.

A conflicted being: He is constantly fighting his own corrupted data, which can sometimes cause him to give faulty information or glitch out entirely. This adds a layer of vulnerability and humanity to his character, as he struggles to maintain control.

A link to the past: He is the Rangers' only remaining link to their home world. He can access memories and historical data from his time on Astria, allowing the Rangers to learn more about their world's history and the invasion.

Character arc: M3RL1N's character arc involves him slowly piecing himself back together, both digitally and emotionally. As the Rangers help him, his glitches become less frequent, and his memory returns. He goes from being a cryptic advisor to a wise and dependable mentor, with the core of his AI wizard self re-emerging.
