I need help please social and life in general
Hey reddit
TLDR:
If anyone has advice for:
• building real study habits for difficult classes like calculus
• dealing with ADHD, anxiety, and depression in college
• turning acquaintances into real friendships
• handling loneliness during freshman year
I would really appreciate it.
I’m trying to improve things, but right now it feels like I’m stuck between struggling academically and feeling pretty alone socially.
I also don’t want to overwhelm my only close friend here (about 6 months) by putting all my mental baggage on
Background: small high school (31 graduates), magnet school. I avoided dating in high school and mostly focused on school. I had friends but never really got experience with relationships. I’m also socially awkward in text and not very flirty, so dating apps probably won’t work for me. In person I’m actually a good talker and people tell me I’m charismatic, just not in a romantic way.
This post might seem kind of structured, but I genuinely need help and don’t really know who to talk to.
Academically things have been rough. I Q-dropped chemistry and might end up with a C in calculus and have to retake it over the summer. The frustrating part is that I feel like I put in hours but I’m not improving. I also recently got diagnosed with ADHD, anxiety, and depression after professors recommended I get evaluated. I started ADHD medication recently and it has helped a bit, but I still don’t have good study habits or consistency.
Socially I feel like I’m in this weird middle zone. I know a lot of people and conversations usually go well, but they never really turn into close friendships. Sometimes we exchange Instagrams or talk when we see each other, but that’s usually it. I have a friend group from someone I met at orientation and they’re honestly great, but I still feel like I don’t have that one friend I can always make plans with.
Dating has also been weird. A lot of my friends have situationships or relationships and it just seems to happen naturally for them in college. I’ve never really gotten anywhere close to that kind of experience. I’m not waiting for some perfect person or anything, but it worries me that if someone does come along eventually I’ll basically have zero experience compared to other people my age.
Engineering also doesn’t help because my classes are super male dominated. I literally have no girls in my calc or chem classes.
Honestly I’m just really disappointed in myself right now. My grades aren’t where I want them, I might have to retake classes over the summer, and I feel like I’m wasting scholarships and financial aid. My parents are immigrants and supportive, but they can’t really help with navigating college or mental health stuff.
What scares me the most is the thought that if I graduate like this I might just end up alone. I don’t really go to bars or clubs, and when I get focused on work I tend to isolate myself.
If anyone has gone through something similar, especially with ADHD or freshman year struggles, I would really appreciate advice.
Also if anyone has ways of dealing with anxiety or depression before getting medication for it, please let me know.
