About four months ago, I pointed out that fan channels inspired by SMG4 had been around for years, but only after the announcement of SMG4’s end would we would really see people trying to become the “next SMG4.” Well, now it’s happening and the issue I warned about is becoming clear: everyone is going after the same audience instead of finding ways to expand SMG4’s legacy.

That’s the core problem. So many channels are trying to recreate the same style, humor, and energy, all chasing the existing fanbase. Even with the best intentions, this creates a crowded space where nothing stands out. When every creator is appealing to the same group, passion turns into competition, and what should be a tribute to SMG4 becomes a race for views. The originality that made SMG4 special starts to fade.

Accessibility only makes it worse. Modern SMG4 leaned heavily into long-running arcs, original characters, and lore-heavy storytelling. That was great for dedicated fans, but it made it hard for new viewers to jump in. Legacy continuers often mirror this approach, meaning even classic-style channels hit a ceiling. Original SM64 machinima and creative variations do exsist, but because SMG4 is so dominant, new audiences often never give them a chance.

Then there’s the identity trap. Most legacy continuers are focused on *being SMG4*, instead of building something new. Ironically, the channels most likely to carry the spirit forward are the ones who already have their own voice and identity. They’re not trying to chase the exact same audience.

If legacy continuers keep chasing the same audience, SMG4’s impact won’t grow it’ll just stay trapped in the same bubble. This isn’t a knock on anyone I know there’s passion and love behind these channels but it’s an issue that needs to be acknowledged.
