Intense anxiety triggered by coworkers touching my personal items

NSFWSpoilerCrisis

Long story short, I used to literally wash, disinfect, and clean objects after they had been touched by others. It wasn’t really about a fear of contamination, but more about the feeling that they had been “invaded” and didn’t belong to me anymore.

Now I feel like I’m better, but I still get very, very anxious (to the point where my body actually hurts from the anxiety) when someone I don’t know well, like a coworker, comes and touches my personal items without asking first.

For example, I have a colleague who has literally (!!!) touched every single object I have on my desk out of pure curiosity. Yesterday, they even came over to me (while they were sitting at theirs) just to touch my new bag. Today, they came by for something else and stopped at my desk just to pick up my sunglasses and hold them.

I hate the unpredictability of it, and I could feel my body starting to hurt from the anxiety.

I told my boss about it. They probably don’t fully understand me because of the generational gap, but I hope they will discuss it with the colleague so that I can stop living in fear that they will come over and touch every new thing I bring to the office.

Besides this being related to a “disorder,” I honestly think it’s also about basic politeness and good manners to ask someone before touching their belongings...
