Advice to help avoid paying for cloud storage

I am looking for some advice on purchasing a raid setup that I can continue to expand as my data needs increase. Would like to back up two cell phones as well as 2 computers, photos, videos and assorted other data. I dont want to spend a fortune but would like the data to be safe and not have to upgrade the system completely in the next handful of years.
